Payday Loans in Northwest Territories
Short-term, high-cost credit of up to $1,500 for 62 days or less. Federal law caps the cost of borrowing at $14 per $100 advanced. Because Northwest Territories licenses most non-bank lenders and sets its own consumer protection rules, the terms available to you depend on provincial law as well as the federal limits.
How payday loans works in practice
The structure is simple: you borrow a small amount, the lender holds a post-dated payment or pre-authorised debit, and the loan is repaid on your next pay date. There is usually no amortisation — you repay the principal and the fee in one go rather than in instalments.
The size and shape are constrained by regulation. A payday loan is generally up to $1,500 for a term of 62 days or less (financial consumer agency of canada). The product only exists where a province has chosen to license it.
Quebec is the clearest example of the opposite choice: Quebec does not license payday lending, which effectively prohibits the model there (Financial Consumer Agency of Canada). That is a provincial policy decision, not a gap in the law.
What drives the cost
The federal figure is the anchor: federal regulations cap the cost of borrowing on a licensed payday loan at $14 per $100 advanced (Payday Lending Regulations SOR/2024-114). Some provinces legislate a lower cap, and where they do, the lower figure is the one that binds.
Expressed as a fee per $100 the number looks small. Expressed as an annual rate it is enormous, because the term is about two weeks rather than a year. That is the honest way to compare it against any other product: annualise it, then compare.
The second cost is the one that does not appear on the contract. Rolling a payday loan over, or taking a new one to repay the last, multiplies the fee. The fee is charged per advance, so a loan rolled three times has cost roughly three fees to borrow the same money once.
Where this product goes wrong
The failure mode is structural rather than personal. A borrower who cannot repay in full on the next pay date has three bad options: roll the loan and add another fee, take a second loan elsewhere, or default and incur NSF charges and collection activity. The first two convert a one-off shortfall into a recurring cost. If you can already see that the next pay date will not cover it, the loan is not the right instrument.
Comparing a payday loan honestly
| Item | Why it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Cost per $100 advanced | The regulated measure in Canada. It is the number the cap applies to. |
| Annualised equivalent | Converts a two-week fee into a rate comparable with any other credit product. |
| Number of advances | Each rollover adds another fee. This is where the real cost accumulates. |
| Alternative cost | What the same amount would cost on a credit card, a line of credit, or a payment arrangement with the original creditor. |
| Consequence of default | Pre-authorised debits, NSF fees and collection activity all follow a missed repayment. |
Before you take one, in order
- Ask the original creditor for more time. A utility, a landlord or a telecom provider will often arrange a payment date for free. This is the cheapest option available and the most often skipped.
- Price a credit-card cash advance. Expensive, but usually far cheaper than a payday loan when annualised.
- Check whether your province licenses payday lending at all. If it does not, the product is not lawfully available to you.
- Confirm the cap that applies. Federal regulation sets the outer figure; a lower provincial cap prevails.
- Borrow only what you can repay on the next pay date. A payday loan that needs rolling was the wrong instrument on day one.
What usually costs less
Every alternative is cheaper. A payment arrangement with the creditor who is owed the money usually costs nothing. A credit-card cash advance or a small line of credit costs a fraction. A salary advance from an employer, a credit union small loan, or a provincial emergency assistance programme may all be available. If the shortfall is structural rather than a timing problem, a not-for-profit credit counselling service or a licensed insolvency trustee addresses the cause rather than the symptom.
After you sign
Repay in full on the due date and the transaction ends there. If you cannot, speak to the lender before the debit is presented: an arranged extension is usually cheaper than a failed pre-authorised debit plus the lender's own charges.
If payday borrowing has become a pattern rather than a one-off, that is the signal to address the underlying cash flow, because the arithmetic of repeated fees does not improve with repetition.

What applies in Northwest Territories
Federal limits apply nationwide: the criminal rate of interest is 35% per year, and licensed payday lending is capped at $14 per $100 advanced where a regime operates. Northwest Territories layers provincial licensing and consumer protection on top, and may set a lower payday cap.
Verify the provincial position with the regulator before you commit rather than relying on a figure from a comparison site — including this one.

Frequently asked questions
How much can I borrow with a payday loan in Canada?
Federal regulation constrains payday loans to a maximum of $1,500 and a term of 62 days or less. Provincial rules may be tighter, and individual lenders set their own limits below that.
Are payday loans legal in Quebec?
Quebec does not operate a licensed payday lending regime, which effectively prohibits the payday loan model in the province.
What happens if I cannot repay a payday loan?
The lender will typically attempt the pre-authorized debit, which can incur an NSF fee, and may then pursue the debt through collections. Contact the lender before the due date to ask about an extension, and consider a not-for-profit credit counselling service if the debt is part of a wider problem.
Which province's rules apply to me?
The province or territory you live in. Federal law sets the outer limit on the cost of credit across Canada, and each province licenses most non-bank lenders and may set a lower payday cap.
Is loanloon.ca a lender?
No. loanloon.ca is a matching and comparison service. We do not lend money, set interest rates, or make credit decisions. A request submitted here is passed to a licensed lender or matching partner, which assesses it against its own criteria.
Does a request affect my credit score?
That depends on the lender. Some use a soft inquiry that other lenders cannot see; others run a hard inquiry that appears on your credit report. Ask which one applies before you submit anything.
